An apology

Postby OmahaGuy » Thu Jan 10, 2019 6:31 pm

Posted one on the BJU and I thought I would hear. More so for here since I'm on here more than the BJU.

I just want to take a moment and apologize for my debbie downer attitude. Admittedly, I sound like a total troll. I don't mean to troll though I just call it like I see it and not how I want to see it.

Allow me to explain how I got to this.

Believe it or not, I used to be incredibly optimistic about this program. Before last year, I always felt optimistic for the future and one day, we'll finally get over the hump and get to that Sweet 16 and maybe even win a Big East title along the way (regular season or tourney).

Then the KState game came. And it went. That was the night that broke me. It completely changed the way I view the program and Mac. After that game and how horrendous we looked, I couldn't help but think back to RI 2017 or Baylor 2014 or Duke 2013. Good freaking lord we just always save the worst games of the season for the worst possible times. Last night reminded me why I changed my views from optimistic to pessimistic. Even throughout the regular seasons for the past 5.5 years in this league, we've taken gut punch after gut punch after gut punch over and over again. Last night was the biggest one of them all. It takes a toll on you, doesn't it? It makes you question, has this program hit its ceiling? Are we even capable of greater success? Or is it just gonna be the same old, same old over and over again?

I decided that similar to Jet, I will no longer watch or attend anymore games this season and I'm just going to check box scores. I will continue to watch other Big East games though and you know I'll be rooting hard for our conference to succeed in March.

Don't expect me to post here for awhile. Though I'll be back in March to do my annual season review for every team when their season ends.

I wish the Jays and the rest of the conference nothing but the best the rest of the year. Again, I apologize for my behavior. I promise to do better in the future. See you guys in March.

You know pessimism isn’t exactly unwarranted in a lot of cases in sports.

Take me for example, I like St. John’s basketball, but I also like the jets, Mets and the Knicks.

4 teams. Basically no winning for about 25 years with the exception for a couple of Mets runs that had sad endings, and a pair of mark Sanchez AFC Championship losses.

But I love these teams, ever since I was a kid. But there’s only so many losses I can take.

With all the losing going on, being optimistic, it’s not only hard, but it’s simply stupid.

If you get slapped in the face 9 times in a row you’re not gonna have a smile on your face and expect the next one to be a pat on the back. No it’s gonna be another slap.

So don’t apologize. I don’t blame you. Sports is tough. Tough for you. Tough for me, a NYC sports fan who doesn’t like the Yankees and giants, the two teams who have actually won recently.

It’s why I hate Boston fans and teams. They win all the time. It’s jealousy and I’m not afraid to admit that. Just wanna win

You have absolutely nothing to be sorry for.

I have felt the same way about McDermott. When there were rumours about him and Ohio State, I wasn't all that bothered by it, and felt that Holtmann was far more vital to the conference.

Unfortunately, I think those flirtations with Ohio State have bought McDermott a lot of time.

Creighton's had some bad luck with season ending injuries to one position they couldn't afford it in those years. McDermott's made the tournament 5 out of 8 years at Creighton. 3-5 record isn't excellent, but not really that bad. Ed Cooley's 1-5 and probably not going back to the dance this year.

The latest bracket matrix has Creighton right in the thick of things. That was a gut wrenching loss, but I don't agree that it's time to abandon the ship. At least see how they rebound vs. Nova on Sunday.

Creighton is in a really weird situation with McDermott. I don't think it's much different than how Georgetown was wtih JT3 quite frankly.

It ain't easy being a sports fan. I totally understand taking a break, especially if your team only serves to torment its fans.

Boston sports, like SJUBBALL mentioned, have had a ridiculously embarrassingly insane amount of success in the 2000's. But prior to that, basically my entire childhood and into my 30's, it was the exact reverse. Like complete soul crushing losses affecting several generations of fans (i'm think of the Red Sox here). The Patriots were a basket case of nuttiness. If i get time i'll give a rundown of those seasons and events.

Point being is that no matter how devastated a fanbase might be about a single play, or game, or series, or season, or decade, or generation, or lifetime, or history, there is ALWAYS a chance that things can change for the better, and to an extremely successful degree, and quickly.

Anyway, i really find this topic interesting and hope i get a chance to write something in more detail at some point.

Amen to what you're saying. From DC so until last years Caps Stanley Cup run- it was a pretty bad run of futility. 20 years of not winning the semifinals of any league. With a LOT of REALLY good teams. You always think I'm not going to get emotionally involved as much, and then something happens, and you're right back emotionally attached. Maybe moreso than before. But speaking as a Caps fan, when you finally DO win, nothing tops it.

I mean, from the outside looking in, I feel some fans for teams like Creighton/Xavier are overreacting a bit.

Creighton fans- you've made the Tournament the previous TWO years. Currently you are #52 in NET. You probably don't make it, but no big deal if you don't. Nobody expected you to. It's a rebuilding year. You're not as good because you had a player go to the NBA (great for recruiting), but you're actually performing better than most people expected. You're still fighting for a berth, but there's NO pressure to make the Tournament this year. That's not a horrible situation to be in, and doesn't warrant throwing in the towel for this year. I know that close losses are painful, and ALL of us overreact to them, but they happen. I think every single fan base on this forum has experienced a painful loss during the past month.

My two favorite teams (St. John's and Atlanta Braves) haven't even won a single playoff series in 18 years. Some fans, like DePaul, have it even worse. Creighton has made the Tournament more often than not, and they've won a few games in recent years. Again, just from my perspective, I don't see the problem in Omaha. You guys will be fine. In fact, you're doing a great job and Creighton's profile has raised A LOT in the Big East.

Do the words Easter Epic mean anything to you? 1:55 AM Easter Sunday. Or all the Penguins miserable games.... All the 4 OT losses.

And then.... Last spring!!!!
