Stever's points are valid. All 3 were doing well in the larger, old conference, not so in the new configuration. What's up?

But MM... what benefits accrue to the BE when we have a 25-5/15-3 St Johns, 24-6/14-4 Gtwn, 23-7/13-5 Marquette? What benefits additional to or above what we currently have with a successful Nova, X, Butler, and Prov? Remember that Gtwn & Marquette were supposed to Lead the new configuration to the promised land...so to speak.

The argument has been that those "traditional" powers will aid the conferences status. How so? And nearly as important- who falls (nova, x, butler, providence) as they are supplanted by the traditional powers?

5 years ago was the C7 in disarray?

Marquette and Georgetown had just shared the regular season championship. Marquette would go on to the elite 8. Georgetown unfortuantely had to visit Dunk City.
Villanova had bounced back from a rough 2012 season to make the tourney in 2013- and were starting to bounce back- we all know how that bounce back would end.....
Providence had hired Cooley and had gone 9-9 in conference play in 2013, and made the QF of the NIT before losing to Baylor. I really think if the OBE had stuck together, Providence would have become a major factor there.
St John's had bounced back from their rough 2012 season(the Lavin cancer year) to make the NIT in 2013.

Seton Hall did struggle in 2013. But they were only a year removed from being a 1 seed in the NIT.

DePaul was well, DePaul.

I would say as a whole, the C7 was pretty strong. Not as strong at the top as in the late '00s where Georgetown and Nova both made final 4's- along with Marquette being a solid team- but 2013 had Providence and St John's both much stronger. So to me, I wouldn't say the C7 was in disarray in 2013. 3 NCAA teams(2 being top 3 seeds), and 2 NIT teams- out of 7 teams- isn't bad.

Have some imagination. Imagine trying to fight mudslinging when other recruiters are whispering all kinds of naughty things to teenagers. Bringing up the 2013 record doesn't say much.

MM, others...
A resurgence of the old school 3 (Gtwn, Marq, StJ) is great for those who long for the Good old days, but surely you don't think they can top what we have now?

This Big East is the envy of most conferences and has established a short, but great track record.
The conference 2nd-4th nationally each year. 5, 6, and 7 teams into the Dance consistently, out of 10 teams.
Nova 2 Nattys, 30+ wins 5 years running, 4 RS championships, 2 BETs
X an EE, a reg season championship and 28+ Ws a year
Butler another SS, a 2nd in conference and good NCAAs
Prov a BET Championship, 5 straight NCAAs
Seton Hall with a BET championship, and others with singular achievements

I couldn't make up better stuff than this. Any resurgence by the old school 3 would need to be monumental to "improve" upon the current reality. I don't care what
"markets" they are in.

The benefit of SJ being a top 3-5 team and being a national presence again is taking full advantage of the biggest media market in the entire country and arguably the most famous venue in the country. Despite the terrible performances of the last few decades, we are overall one of the more storied programs in college hoops. We were top 10 in all-time wins for a while up until the last several years where we have been awful and now we stand at #27 I believe. Who knows what would happen if DePaul were ever good, but we've already seen what happens when there's a good SJ team in 2011. Look at this atmosphere https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGD6Tr06u1E

If St. John's was a top 25 team every year, MSG would be sold out on a regular basis...the Knicks are awful and always will be awful. This is a basketball-starved metro area. NYC area teams in all big time sports have been terrible except the Yankees. People forget that the SJ V. G'Town games are packed with 10-12k in attendance even when both teams are awful. Guaranteed sellout if they're both good.

A10 == AAC && A10 == Mid Major ==> AAC == ?

stever? Can you help out with the rest of your transitive logic?

St. Johns getting back near the top would be huge, IMO. Mullin is right, the atmosphere there can be a significant difference maker. I sincerely doubt DePaul will be able to turn it around, sadly. The administration and leadership have allowed the program to sink since the 90's. They have already lost a substantial portion of their "old" alumni that experienced the national success, and their younger alumni could care less about basketball since they have never been competitive. They have become complacent with their position and appear content and satisfied with the efforts and "process" performance. It is what it is. Maybe Loyola can use his past March's spark and turn that into the new Wichita State program in the MVC. They have already captured the attention of the Chicago-market, and they have already sold a ton of tickets for this upcoming year (same cannot be said about DePaul).

At the end of the day, parity is very good for the league (as long as our blue-blood, Villanova, remains at or near the top most years). If we can get another team in the Final Four in the next couple of years, that would be huge. Even getting a few teams to the Sweet 16 would be substantial.

I think the best thing possible for the conference would be for the top 5 to look like this 5 years from now:

1. Georgetown
2. St. John's
3. Nova
4. DePaul
5. Marquette

Yes, C7 bias but I'd have a hard time seeing why that wouldn't be true. Nova has established themselves as a blue blood and need to remain top 3. The other 4 are all sleeping giants (with the possible exception of DePaul) in major media markets with large alumni bases. Their ceiling are extremely high. As much as GTMO likes Creighton, it'd be bad for a team like them to be at the very top every year.

If you asked Fox right now who they would rather be #1 next year, Creighton or St. John's, does anybody here honestly believe they'd say Creighton?

Keep in mind, we've seen Nova fans pack the Garden the past couple years and really help attendance. Nova is close to the Garden, but SJU is right there. You're never going to have Creighton or Xavier fans turn out like that due to their locations.

I don't like this spot but given program prestige relative to market size it seems like it's accurate

I'd be happy with Marquette anywhere in the top 5 (even #1), because I feel there's a significant drop-off after them. I also trust Marquette to sustain their success, unlike teams like SJU and DePaul. Tbh I think you could rearrange the Top 5 in a bunch of ways and have it still make sense.
