Fox Sports 1 having trouble w/ Cable and Satellite companies

Postby Omaha1 » Mon Jul 15, 2013 6:03 pm

Not good news although I'm sure everything is negotiable and hope it works itself out soon.

Fox Sports officials had been hoping that they would have most of the major providers on board by now so they would have a smooth transition when the switch is flicked to turn the current Speed Channel to Fox Sports 1 next month. However, with increasing sports rights fees being passed to the cable and satellite companies and subsequently to consumers, it's not a surprise to see some pushback. The providers had thought that they would be able to carry Fox Sports 1 at the original cost of Speed until that contract ended, but Fox is apparently trying to reap benefits similar to ESPN, which has the highest per subscriber cost of any cable network.

I already don't have NBC Sports Network (I am a big IndyCar fan, and they are stuck there). Please DISH, don't relegate FS1 to the upper levels. I refuse to pay over a certain amount for programming. Especially when I don't use most of the stations.

Wow just read this. Seems Fox did not send out feelers on what the networks would or would not take. Going from .23 to .80 for carriage fees is a bit of a jump to start with. The they want to go to 1.50 in 3rd year. I think they should have started out keeping the price for SPEED carriage until they prove to the carriers that they are bringing in that size audience to justify those increases. Lots of hype but you haven't proven anything yet. Lets hope they didn't/don't mess this up, getting late in the negotiating process.

Fox 1 says it will provide 5000 hours of live programing but like so many of the hours of programming live or otherwise, just how many will be watching all that. Since we are not still settled in yet in a midwest community we are not paying for cable/satellite, but back in California it was close to 170.00 month. Now that we have been away from cable we really haven't missed it all that much.

Thanks to all those who suggested places for possible relocation to. Wife really loved Milwaukee especially as she sees it as close enough to Chicago for weekend shopping sprees! :( $$$$. Oh well as they say can't take it with you. In St. Louis area now, also very nice. Haven't really found any place we didn't really like.

We did have a wonderful two weeks in Giant park State Park (believe that was its name) near Carbondale, Illinois. Most of our families came renting cabins (without power, water, TV etc) to experience living without all our amenities, including cell phones. All electronic gadgets had to be left back in the vehicles. Great way to get everyone to bond. The men spend most day fishing, women made meals from scratch (only meat was obtained from nearby store). Women loved it as it was great time for gossiping and catching up on old family news. Discovered that two of our grand daughters signed LOI with two A-10 schools. Two boys are going to Georgia Tech and Staten in Fla.

Highly recommend taking a vacation like we did, does wonders for bringing the families together. Evenings around camp fires telling stories (most made up) was a hoot. Believe it or not the youngins loved it too and found out there is live without gameboys, cell phones and social networks.

Does Fox have the right to put NFL games on FS1? That would sure as heck drive demand.

No... i'm fairly certain the NFL has contracted for national broadcast channels only.

FS1 isn't national? They will be as much as ESPN is and they have live NFL games.

Actually its the opposite. Fox & CBS games are on local affiliates and their coverage is regional. Thus why people buy Sunday Ticket so they can see their desired team if its out of market.

FS1 being national could only play one game at a time, the local affiliates would freak out if they were competing with FS1. A better bet is for FS1 to convince the NFL to sell some Thursday night games to the network and then move the Thursday night college football games to a different night Wednesday or Friday most likely.

National wasn't the key word.... Broadcast was... old school TV terminology for ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX. You know the ones you get on regular cable and free over the air. FS1 whether its considered national or not is a pure cable channel not a broadcast channel. FS1 would not be able to play one NFL game without a rewrite of the contract. Currently the only cable station that has contractual permission to show NFL games is ESPN. (CBS likewise can't move the NFL to CBS sports to buoy that station) (Granted the NFL has decided to force us to find our NFL network station a few times a year but that doesn't count as its in house).

Simply put the NFL contracts specifically designate what channel the game can be showed on, what it can be pre-empted for and what happens during a preemption... call it the Heidi clause.
