Will the Big East be able to keep up with the P5 long-term?

As we all know, the Power 5 conferences are consolidating their power in the football realm to the point where anyone outside of that group will be financially disadvantaged to the point of being irrelevant. My question is, will this ever happen to the basketball side of things and if so which side will the Big East be on?

1) Big East will be fine
- We are a collection of 10 like-minded institutions with profitable, prominent and successful basketball programs location in major cities.

2) Big East will not be fine
- Our alumni base is dwarfed by public universities and will ultimately lead to a financial obstacle we cannot overcome

I would be interested in the community's thoughts on this, I could see it going either way.

We'll be fine. Basketball players have huge egos, and we will always have the trump card (outside of Duke, Kansas, Kentucky) of being able to say to recruits that YOU WILL be the big man on campus, not the other sport that plays between bowl season and the spring scrimmage.

Basketball isn't an expensive sport to fund so I think we will be fine. There is so much you can do to your facilities, arena etc....most of the Big East teams are already doing it.

We will be fine, absolutely. No question.

The real question is what becomes of the schools that are left out.

Yea, but if the P5 schools had a larger basketball budget then they could hire away our best coaches. And this problem would only grow worse if players began to get paid.

Big East basketball budgets are very healthy, and the programs have strong fan bases in their markets.

The football schools make a lot of money, which they in turn re-invest in football. The arms race is football. The Big East basketball revenue and institutional commitment is fine on the national scale and will continue to remain competitive. We currently spend more than most Football 5 schools currently.

Get ready for stever to tell us how the sky is falling....

If we are ever going to see the disadvantages of not having football, we'd already see it with the evolution of The Playoffs.

If anything, our programs have all improved overall since joining the Big East. We are all recruiting and competing at a totally new level.

Most of their huge budgets go back into FB. They need to keep up with the joneses.

Here's the thing we need to remember. The P5 is pushing down the G5 so they don't have to share that big time FB money with them. When it comes to us, we aren;t looking for a penny of that money. What helps us is we bring in money when it comes to a post season basketball tournament. Also helping us is that we almost perfectly overlap with the Big Ten. We are the private urban school version of that conference. Their alum like playing us, their AD's like playing us and Jim Delany likes playing us. Being both in bed with Fox helps us out there as well.

I think the big thing that we have to wait for is what type of TV contract we get once it's back on the table. For the next 9 years or whatever it is the league is fine.

1) Get another good TV contract
2) Retain MSG
