The MSG Cup

Okay I posted a thought I had on another thread for a neat idea for something that would take place every four years like the world cup. A pre-season tourny featuring all the teams who either once or currently called the Big East home for basketball (sorry Temple).

Using the end of last seasons RPI to rank teams for this fictional tourny that would take place next season.

RPI Rankings last season/seed

1/2 Nova
2/7 Miami
3/8 Xavier
4/11 WVU
5/16 Louisville
6/23 Seton Hall
7/24 Notre Dame
8/32 Providence
9/33 UConn
10/40 Syracuse
11/53 Butler
12/54 Pitt
13/55 Cincy
14/80 Virginia Tech
15/94 Creighton
16/103 Georgetown
17/111 Marquette
18/201 DePaul
19/230 USF
20/245 St. John's
21/248 BC
22/293 Rutgers

The top ten teams get a first round bye, all games held at MSG with a champ crowned and a couple of really good OOC wins to start the season.

The teams I don't miss even a little:

Rutgers - possibly the worst major conf BB team of the last 20 years
Pitt - hate their style of play; hate their fans; NEVER did anything in March

The rest are mostly OK, even if I now wish them nothing but failure.

For me i never cared about seeing Miami (Fla), West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Rutgers, South Florida, or yeah Pitt too.

I may be remembering incorrectly but I think of Miami sucking in non-conference, thinking hoops was a big joke, and then in the BE playing loose, taking stupid shots that would go in and laughing coming down the court, leading to upsetting teams in BE play.

How fun would that tourny be every four years though? I know it will never happen in a million years but it would be a ton of fun to watch.

I have little to no interest in helping schools like Miami and Syracuse and Pittsburgh increase their exposure in NYC at all.

Not to mention the fact that a poor showing by the current Big East schools could possibly give the conference a huge black eye on a very large stage.

Really? Then why even participate in the NCAAs? A poor showing could give us a black eye. OR a good showing propels multiple teams into the rankings and a good jump start on a NCAA birth and possibly a higher seed in the NCAAs.

BTW Cuse is playing in MSG every year anyway.

I used to love beating Pitt though...you could always count on them to be well ranked, and then lose when it counted :D
