Is Kevin Ollie the only coach in the past 30 years to win a national championship without ever having been to the elite 8 before?

Before him it was Steve fisher as the interim coach at Michigan (in a game that was stolen from seton hall)?

No. Tubby Smith. HE had gone sweet 16 at Georgia, and won title 1st year at Kentucky...

So 2 of them since the 1980's?
And Tubby took over a program that won it two years prior and had lost in the finals in OT the immediate year prior?

Goes to show that the true high ends exams aren't built over night as flash in the pan seasons. Need some longer stability.
