The importance of out of conference games

Postby NovaBall » Sat Jan 30, 2016 1:36 pm

Watching this butler v Marquette game just goes to show how important out of conference games are.

Both teams ate 3-5 in conference, and the records are 14-6 and 14-7 respectively. Yet ine if considered a good bet to dance and the other isn't even on people's bubble radar.

And it's not like butler was amazing out of conference. But their only loss was to a good team and they picked up enough middle of the pack wins along the way to earn respect. Purdue is a very good win. But the others like temple, Cincy, Tennessee are just bubble type wins. But those wins matter.

Marquette's schedule really set them back this year. They just needed to put more top hundred teams that they could beat in the list and they would still be hunting for a bid.

Marquette betta learn from this terrible schedule for the upcoming years. I don't know what the staff up in Milwaukee was thinking. This is the Big East damn it... Schedule the big boy programs... not cupcakes. They are only hurting the conference by doing so

A program like MU that has been one of the more relevant ones in this league is likely going to miss the NCAA yet again, and this time, not due to lack of talent, but more due to their cupcake scheduling
Stony Brook Red, Connecticut Blue, and Big East basketball!

Everyone can schedule balls to the walls. You can lose games if you schedule tough. Look at Georgetown, was horrible out of conference, but still has a pulse to make the dance.

I just saw that Marquette has the 284 ooc SOS. How does that happen?

I hope someone from the league office talked to Woj about that atrocious OOC schedule. They should be fined if that happens again.

The only reason marquette is considered a bad team is their out of conference schedule. They look good on the floor, but you have that type of schedule and suddenly your rpi is the same as depaul's.

While I agree that Creighton's, Seton Halls and Butler's OOC all are nearly as bad as Marquette, it's sometimes hard to predict how good your OOC will truly be until the games are played. I think everyone can agree that looking at Marquette's before the start of the season, you KNEW it was gonna be BAD.
