How will the Big East be officiated?

There is a story in our local paper today about big east officiating. I wonder how they will ref games? Do we want to be the league that plays tough hard-nosed basketball, or play a style more like the other leagues?
The four points of emphasis regarding perimeter defenders, according to Cahill, are:
» Keeping a hand or forearm on an offensive player in an attempt to “measure” a player. “The key word is keep,'' he said.
» Jamming an offensive player with a hand or forearm more than once. “If you do it a second time,'' Cahill said, “it's a foul every time.''
» Placing two hands on an offensive player. “There's no free pass on this one,'' he said. “It's a foul every time.''
» Attempting to use a hand or forearm to impede the progress of a player's dribble. “You have to throw your hands and take contact with your torso,'' he said. “They want you to play defense with your feet.''

Hopefully the same way it has been. Nothing else is acceptable. The players need to battle through contact and decide the game themselves, especially towards the end. I can't stand players/teams who go looking to the ref for a foul call every time someone taps their wrist or looks at them the wrong way.

I think the perception is that the Big East has been a physical league and that somehow has worked against us in the NCAA tournament. I don't have proof correlating the two things but I've heard it mentioned.

There's no real proof that the tough play has hurt us in the NCAA. It only did back in the 90's when we instituted the six foul rule for a season or two.

I have certainly heard that as well and I think it is all from Pitt not being able to advance in the NCAA

I don't think the Big East is going to be as physical going forward anyway. Pittsburgh, Cincinatti and West Virginia were the most phyical teams to play the Hoyas in the past. They're in other conferences now.

I don't know what you're talking about. I mean I agree with those teams but MU has been known as one of the most physically touch teams around. I like the quote from the Murray State coach who said that they felt like they were playing Marquettes football team not basketball team.

All big east teams are physical some just more than others. The most physical left the league, doesn't mean well turn ACC soft but well have fewer games with more whistles than buckets.

I really hate the last emphasis. I don't understand why you can't use your forearm to impeded defensive progress off the dribble, assuming you are in good defensive position. I've always thought it was poor defense if you let the offensive player get into your chest, and have always been taught to try to do that as an offensive player. Once you get into the body of the defender it easy to either a) draw a foul or b) bump the defender off balance to give you a step. I'm certainly glad I don't have to play defense if that is going to be a rule.
