UNLV was outstanding when Tarkanian left. We really should compare '92 UNLV with '15 Louisville, and UNLV in 89-90-91-92 was actually bigger than UL, the Runnin Rebels, cooler, glitzier, the rage, and coming off a better run. They (UNLV) were the Miami Hurricanes of the college hoops world thru 1992 (well, they had a postseason ban in 92).
But it took them 15 years and at least 5 coaches (and many fill-in coaches) before Lon Kruger got them out of the NCAA first round, and they still haven't regained their Tarkanian mojo completely. From 93 to 06, 14 seasons, UNLV earned only 2 NCAA bids.
In Denny Crum's last 4 years at Louisville his fanbase wanted to run him out of town. For that matter, in '12, the Louisville fanbase was close to dumping Pitino himself (after losing at PC by 30... who knows, that PC loss may have resulted in an uptick in lapdances).
Crum's last 4 years with Louisville:
1998: 12-20 (5-11 in C-USA).
1999: 19-11 (11-5 in C-USA, lost first round NCAA to Gonzaga).
2000: 19-12 (10-6 in C-USA, lost first round NCAA to Creighton).
2001: 12-19 (8-8 in C-USA).

Billy Jack, I remember being in Providence for a game between the Friars and the Rebels back in the day. I couldn't believe how well UNLV traveled. I forget where I was eating before the game but there were a whole bunch of Rebels fans in the restaurant with their red sweaters and other Rebels paraphernalia. Very visible and very impressive. They were something special as a basketball program back then.

Louisville has made an enormous mistake by not cutting ties with Pitino immediately. They had the opportunity to disassociate themselves from what happened. They didn't. Now they own it. It's theirs, not just Pitino's.
