In reality in college basketball the only slam dunks are Kentucky, Kansas, U of L, Duke, NC, and the ilk. None of these schools are going to be going to the BE.

Agreed, kind of. As programs to blindly add into a new conference you're right, but there's conference perspective that factors into the metaphor. If Georgetown and Villanova called up the A10, it would be slam dunk addition, but if those two called up the B1G, I guess it'd be a full court shot with time already expired.
As for the Big East additions, I think I'd say Butler and Xavier were uncontested layups, while Creighton might have been an off balance layup. Now the powers that be are going to decide which ten foot pull up they're going to take.

I think you are totally off base. I don't think the Big East gave two craps about what they did to the A10. If they wanted to make sure they were the best "non football" conference hands down, they would have went ahead and decimated the A10.
Also, if they didn't want to crush the A10, they could have made two announcements, one for next year and one for the following year. The fact that we are one month away from the time where A10 teams would still have to pay the higher exit fee and there hasn't been any rumor of an announcement of two more teams should make it pretty clear that the Big East at this point and time is not ready to expand more.
