Mack/Louisville

The home for Big East hoops

And I never blanket dismissed anything.

I just said a couple of things:

- the guy that started the Mack to Louisville thread admitted that he's pulled the idea out of thin air, although Mack might at some point be considered, along with many other coaches.

- there are many sensible reasons that would make Mack stay at Xavier.

- there are other coaches who would be good candidates too, some of whom make as much or more sense (Marshall, Cronin, Painter, Turgeon).

- as with many other discussion threads we have, it's all about possibilities and probabilities... "possibilities" have us spinning in circles envisioning many unlikely or semi-implausible events, and many are a waste of time. "Probabilities" however are things that have a solid chance of happening. Mack to Louisville, in my opinion, is a "possibility"... as is Kevin Ollie, Mick Cronin... Turgeon... Kevin Willard... so instead of annoying us with Mack to Louisville, why not haunt a Bearcat board saying that if Cronin got big Louisville money then he'd bolt Cincinnati?

WSU's two best players, and the guys that lead them on their historic runs the last few years, graduate this spring. The remaining guys are good enough to win the MVC, but are nowhere near the caliber of the two graduating guards. WSU will drop.

The other job to which Marshall was rumored, Indiana, suddenly looks like it won't have an opening at the end of this season after all.

If ever there was a time for Marshall to leave, this would be it.

No offense to Mack, but in comparing the resumes between Mack and Marshall, Marshall has accomplished more despite being in a lesser conference the last 3 years.

If I'm the AD at Louisville I offer Pitino money to Marshall and hope the Koch brothers don't match it. I hate Marshall and put up with his shit for a long time when we were in the MVC, but the dude can coach and recruit.

(Mack seems to show up on these lists every single season. I don't know if he has an agent doing that or what, but X really needs to step up and pay the guy market rate.)

Great points.

Louisville has a chance to be in the Final Four every year, but you can also get run out of town in 3-4 years if you DON'T make the Final Four. Mack could probably coach X for 25 years if he do chooses. That's basically what Jay decided at 'Nova, and we pay him enough that he doesn't have to even think about leaving. Pitino makes $1M more than Jay, but there are a LOT of headaches and pressure that come with that $1M.

I don't know that Painter or Turgeon would be likely to leave. They have top 20 teams in one of the top 2 conferences....

Cronin I think his health situation would preclude it. Also, think if Pitino was being forced out, Cronin being a Pitino friend would look unfavorably to it.

The thing for me with X is if Mack is offered, and he stays- that's a REALLY good thing for X. You want him to be considered and turn it down. Because quite frankly, if he turns down Louisville, that really means he's not going anywhere. It would likely stop for all intents and purposes this yearly job watch at X. Because there aren't many jobs better than Louisville.....

Why are we acting like Pitino is already gone and there's a position to fill? For all we know, 'Ville could say "eh, prostitutes are ok as long as we get a NC from time to time." If any school were going to do it, it would be Louisville, SMU, or Kentucky.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

I think if he was going to stay, that would have been announced already quite frankly.

Read the whole article. It's complicated and ties Pitino with the UofL President's future.

Thank you.

This is the same Athletic Department that BROUGHT BACK Petrino to coach their football program.

All kidding aside, as a long time Xavier fan, I am not worried about this - - at all.

I honestly don't think Louisville is going to be able to make a home run hire here. Whoever takes this job on is going to have to deal with a beefed up compliance department making sure the program is squeaky clean. The administration is also going to be much more involved since whoever the new guy is won't have the same cache that Pitino had. They will be more strict in which kind of player the new coach wants to bring in, which is something I doubt any coach wants to deal with. I see Louisville pulling in a decent coach from another major conference program who is overachieving a little bit with a school that isn't historically a basketball school. Then in like 5 years or so if they aren't competing for championships they dump him, go after anyone and everyone, and give that coach full reign again.
