St Johns has an excellent class coming in. My theory on rankings (which is FAR from flawless) is that if you are a consummate top 75 player across all of the recruiting services, you have the ability to make an immediate and tangible impact as a freshman. More so if you are a 1-3, as big men usually take more time to develop. Obviously, if you are a top 20 guy/possible one and done i.e. Ellenson, that's a whole different story. Ponds is a top 55 guy who has the ability to run the show from day one. Ahmed, being a Juco, should contribute immediately as well, as he already played some "college ball". Freudenberg is intriguing as a Euro player as it looks like he played for Bayern Munichs club team. No idea here.
It does take more than one stellar class to go from a conference bottom dweller to a tourney team (they could still snag some more guys though). But Mullin is doing a great job rebuilding this squad. And the Big East needs St Johns to regain its status as a perennial conference contender as well as become a regular fixture in the rankings/ on the national landscape.
Nova has a stellar class as well. Spellman is a legit 5* and will contribute immediately, especially with Ochefu gone. Xavier heavily recruited Painter, and I really wanted him. We put up a good battle, but he's a Penn kid and Nova was his dream school. We re going to lose that battle 100/100. It may take a year or two, but he's going to be good.

Asked if he’s OK with seeing his name attached to this forgettable campaign, he said: “Hell yeah. And it’s attached to one of the best teams in St. John’s history. That’s the way it should be.
“And probably the best comeback in St. John’s history.”
Asked, exactly, what comeback that will be, Mullin smiled.
“What comes after this,” he said.
When asked if he’s had any second thoughts about taking the job, Mullin laughed. Not a single one.
“I got third thoughts about how I’m going to pay these people back,” he said with a wry grin. “I remember almost every loss I’ve had, and it’s right here [in my head]. We’re coming.”
