I just saw this was announced last year with the Pac-12/Big 12 series—

"ARIZONA, ARIZONA STATE and USC are committed to open Challenge play in Las Vegas in 2021, with return games in the New York City Metro area to occur in 2022, against opponents from a to-be-announced power conference."

This means it should be 3 men's & 1 women's basketball match-ups with 3 Big East schools, where 1 plays both m/w.

I think it'll probably look something like this—
UConn vs. Arizona State (Hurley vs. Hurley)
UConn vs. Arizona State (wbb)
St. John's vs. USC
Villanova vs. Arizona

UConn is the safest bet because of the women's basketball match-up and they'll draw well to NYC in 2022. I paired them with Arizona State because we all want to see, but especially UConn fans, Hurley vs. Hurley. And Arizona State is historically the better wbb program.

If the event is going to be held at new Belmont Park Arena in 2022, I don't see how St. John's isn't involved. I paired us with USC because we've played both Arizona & Arizona State multiple times over these past few years (and could again next year).

And then I went with Villanova just 'cause.

USC has only been to the tournament 3x in the past 20 years. Arizona State has been 14x. There's always going to be recency bias when doing match-ups. That's like saying St. John's mbb is historically a great program when we haven't won an NCAA tournament game in 20 years.

You said that at the end of talking about Arizona State and UConn...hence the confusion. USC wasn't even mentioned in that paragraph.

Sorry, I should've added [out of the 3 Pac-12 schools] to the end.

Arizona WBB finished this season ranked #12 (ahead of Arizona State) and both Hurley bros have said they're not eager to schedule each other. So if the schools involved have any say, I could definitely see it being an Arizona/UConn MBB/WBB match-up.

I'll take either tho. Nice job by Val yet again.

Ah, fair enough. I read that as being in relation to UConn.

No way two schools play both mens and womens. If Uconn women play the men wont. Same goes for whatever womens program from the Pac. Prob Oregon or Stanford.

Nova might not be involved with all their other obligations. I'd say 2 eastern and 1 midwestern because the return games will be in NYC. Look for creighton being involved for it's well traveled fan base. Prob Gtown and either SJU or Seton Hall.

Yes way. Baylor and Oregon are playing in both MBB & WBB in the PAC-Big 12 version of this challenge. It's also been reported by CT media that UCONN MBB is unlikely to participate in the 2021-2022 Gavitt Games/Big 12 Challenge because participants are locked in a few years out. Finally, our AD mentioned last year that he was working on a MBB/WBB doubleheader in NYC.
