Embarrassing hire given they took him from a Big East member and grossly, grossly, grossly overpaid him.

Glad St John's stole their spotlight within an hour or so.

Pitino is the correct basketball hire. But I kind of get why they went after Cooley. Georgetown probably feels like its Men's basketball coach need to be more than just a good basketball coach, if you catch my drift. There really aren't that many candidates, if any, other than Cooley for that role.

Ed is going to get Gtown turned around quick:

TCU transfer Eddie Lampkin will join new HC Ed Cooley at Georgetown. Already a portal splash for Cooley in his first few hours with the program. Expect more to come for the Hoyas.

I just think Cooley isn't worth the negative effects this will have on PC. If you look at his resume- 1 Sweet 16 in 17 years (12/17 at PC), he would've been fired years ago at blue bloods. I get that Georgetown has more resources than PC and he certainly could do better than that, but I still feel he's being graded on a big curve. I also know that Georgetown is terrible right now but to make him one of the top few highest paid coaches in the NCAA, with ZERO deep Tournament runs in many years, is insane to me.

Classic case of a coach recruiting a guy to where he is currently at under the pretense that he might decide to stay and then turning around and recruiting him to his new school when it happens. Kids often will follow the coaches a lot more than the schools, so it makes sense from Lampkin's perspective. I bet Cooley was thinking something like, "I'm 99% sure I'm taking the Georgetown offer tomorrow, but on the off-chance that I don't, I'm gonna still recruit to Providence." Kind of an insurance policy, because every once in awhile these deals fall through last minute or a coach backs out (Never count on that if it's your team's coach lol).

The whole thing is bittersweet, because Cooley has a been a Providence icon, but I'm happy for Georgetown finally having some good news.

Absolutely love the hire and the complete meltdown by the Friar faithful. A fine and suspension for Cooley? Totally unhinged! Providence was always my second favorite BE team, but this league needs rivalries and to move beyond the kumbaya crap that has infected us since the breakup. If this helps move us beyond that I’m happy to add Providence to the list of Cuse, Nova and UConn.

I’m not going to go search for it, but apparently Providence tried to poach JT Jr back in the late 80s. Suck it friars!
