Anyone expecting SJ to compete today is just stupid. There is no other major D1 team in the country that has changed more than ours in the shortest amount of time. Everything is new. New coach, new assistants, brand new players who barely know each other, etc. The team you see out there now was put together in a panic scraping the bottom of the barrel of what was left after Lavin left us dead in the water. On top of all that, our already insanely thin and inexperienced team lost 2 key players in Ellison and Williams. This is why I'm not surprised at this result. We were at a major disadvantage in every facet of the game.
The good news is, this is a team playing without any real PG, without any depth, without any experience, with lots of injuries and rusty players. It's not like we were expected to change everything, scrape the bottom of the barrel for players this year, then act hopeful. We are in a major, major, major overhaul here. Next year we get LoVett (4 star PG), Yakwe (4 star big man), Owens (3 star big man), Freudenberg (4 star top European player), and Ponds (4 star G). We are essentially missing 75% of our talent coming next year. This is 100% a throwaway year where the players just build chemistry and learn from Mullin. We won't be upsetting any top 25 teams for another year or 2. In a few years though, watch out. Lots of people are acting like there is no future in place. Nothing was supposed to happen this year. Our window to really compete may start next year but more likely in 2017. We are going to have lots of 20-30 pt blowout losses this year. That's ok. We are willingly taking 3 steps back because we know after rebuilding we can have a continuous contender.
