First night attendance 12,604. Not bad for two bad Midwestern teams and a bad team from DC playing on a Wednesday. SJ probably helped attendance as they are the local team.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Otherwise you have guys with 2 fouls 4 minutes into the 1st game that matters(no 1/16 but yeah the 1/8 or 2/7 games for Nova/X- and then 1st games for all the other teams)- and you're up a creek w/o a paddle.

If it's crucial that the teams get used to how the games are called you'd think they would have started showing them more than three games before the season ended.

I can see it now: 'Okay guys, you've played defense a particular way all year and that was great but starting now the refs are going to call 50 plus fouls a game so you can see what happens if you continue to play defense like you've been taught. Moving forward we're going to play defensive completely differently than we've been working on all year in practice.'

That seems like quite the moronic plan to me and one doomed to failure. It is however a positive boon for those who feel as I do that the free throw is the most exciting play in all of sports. Any game that features a total of 70 FTs is a-okay in my book. I was on the edge of my seat most of last night watching Marquette score 40 percent of their points on 43 FT attempts. Plus when one team shoots 20 more FTs than the other that prepares them in case they have to play Duke in the tournament.

Considering that last night was a prelim night with St. John's having a horrible year, DePaul who brings literally nobody and Georgetown being less than mediocre- with only 4 schools playing- 12,600 is respectable.

The AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAC is GIVING tickets away to their tournament. Honestly. They'll probably be happy to get half the crowd today that the BE had last night.

Didn't see games so can't comment on how they were called last night. Might have just been one crew. However, if that's the way its going to be called in the BET, then in my opinion the real problem is the lack of our officials calling the games over the last month or so of the season the way the NCAA has directed it be called and the way they are going to be called in the tournament. Had they been consistent throughout the conference season, you would not have had 70 free throws last night because the fellas would know how the game is going to be called.

53 fouls in the SJU/Marquette game last night...FIFTY THREE FOULS!!! Marquette 43 FT St. John's 23 FT. You think anyone in the NCAA's or CBS wants THAT to be what the tournament looks like? No flow to the game AT ALL. If thats what March Madness will look like I don't want to watch.

If the conference had the regular season games reffed the way it would be in the tourney there wouldn't have been 53 fouls. The players would have adjusted.

Then we're the ACC? Get the F outta here, the rule changes suck. Ticky tack don't look at the ball handler crossed eyed or we're calling a foul bull chit.

P.S. Only ACC/Tobacco Road fans like their basketball called that way.

And then they whine about it 3 years later about how a "dirty mid-major team" torpedoed their chances at a NC.

But the fact is that the tourney WILL be called like that. And it's not going back.

Also 9 of Marquette's FT's were late game situations where St John's is trying to catch up. So that's a bit of the high number of free throws for Marquette.
