Attendance

Postby marquette » Thu Mar 10, 2016 3:42 am

Now that the regular season is over the numbers are in on attendance. These are just basic numbers from the Big East website. I just took each teams average attendance, added it together and divided by 10 so Marquette's 19 games at 13,308 is counted as 1 data point the same as DePaul's 14 games at 5,514. A weighted average would likely raise our numbers slightly, but they are impressive as is.

1. Creighton 17,065
2. Marquette 13,308
3. Xavier 10,281
4. Providence 9,703
5. Georgetown 8,879
6. Butler 8,165
7. Villanova 8,120
8. Seton Hall 7,070
9. St. John's 6,612
10. DePaul 5,514

Overall 9,472

These numbers are pretty good, but not surprising considering our OOC success. Down slightly from last year. A comparison.

B1G 12,570
ACC 11,140
Big 12 11,036
Pac 12 7,724
SEC 10,353 (this is their 2014-15 number as I was unable to find statistics on their obnoxiously unwieldy website)

We are in the mix but on the low end for power conferences. Still pretty good company.

AAC 6,190
A10 4,815

Both conferences are really hurt by their lower tier schools, although the A10 only has 1 school averaging over 8,000. The AAC has three such schools (all also over 10,000) and the Big East has 7.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

I must point out that Xavier's "average" exceeds the capacity of the building by 31 fans a game. Cintas was packed to the rafters from season start...and there will be a couple of hundred new seats added in the off season with a new balcony that will extend over the student section. We love us some college basketball in Ohio.

And very proud to be in this league.

Huge credits I creighton and marquette for packing the house in down years. Very impressive

Nova is down a bit from last year simply because the max capacity is down from fewer Wells Fargo games. Their number is almost capacity for the season.

Also Nova playing most of their games on campus this year because of the NCAA Tourney hurts their overall numbers.

We also played more games at Carnesecca than in years past including one moved there because of snow. The administration probably saw the season coming and realized it was a waste of money to have as many games at MSG since we werent very good.

I think as the rivalries increase and the casual fans get more comfortable with the makeup of the league, attendance will go up. I love the Jays, but I'm sure they don't get much attention in the East when they are struggling. The intensity of the rivalries just isn't there yet for some of the match-ups. But that should change in a positive way as we move along.

Marquette peaked in 2008 averaging 16,239 and 2009 with 16,200 so clearly there's either less competition for basketball fans in Nebraska or the in game experience is just that much better at the stadium.

We haven't had attendance this poor since the CUSA in 2005. Hopefully the new arena will bring back some people.

You'd think but we averaged almost 1,000 fans less during the three year span of S16, S16, E8. It may be because people become more invested in four year players like the 3 amigos but gun to my head I'd say we need a better in game experience. Winning would probably fix the abysmal student turn out though.

What needs to be compared to other conferences is the in conference home game attendance, thats where you see the strength of a conference.
