Villanova #1 on Monday?

Postby NovaBall » Sat Feb 06, 2016 8:10 pm

Oklahoma and carolina both lost this week.

They each had a decent edge over nova in the votes this week. Looks like all the 1 and 2 votes went to them. Nova's average poll vote was in the 4.3 range.

Double digit win at #11 is going to look pretty nice for the voters when they look at Villanova's results this week.

I think they will be but honestly it's hard to make an argument for them to be ranked higher than Oklahoma after Oklahoma beat them. The way the polls are made a lot of times its more important when you lose opposed to how many you lose, a good example was when Iowa jumped from 9 to 3 or 4 I believe in one week, the teams ahead of them who lost that week had much better resumes but Iowa didn't lose that week when about 4-8 did.

unc can't win on the road. 'Nova certainly deserves to be #1. But it may be a curse.

Hopefully but I could just as easily see them being #2. When was the last time they were #1?

Would be great for the Big East.

Xavier briefly jumped Nova in the polls a couple weeks ago after losing to Nova by 30. One game in early December is not going to be the deciding factor for anything.

Would be a joke if Nova isn't #1 on Monday. If X can keep on winning we could have quite the matchup on Feb 24 at Cintas.

In the ap poll nova has never been #1. In the coach's poll they have.

Ap poll history:

Last season we ended at #2
Got up to #3 in 2013
#6 in 2011
#2 in 2010
#10 in 2009
#17 in 2008
#2 in 2006
#19 in 2005

From the Lappas era
#4 in 1997
#2 in 1996
#9 in 1995

Rollie only cracked the top ten once, in 1983 when he reached #4

Kraft had 6 top ten teams:
#11 in 1972
#8 in 1971
#9 in 1970
#5 in 1969
#8 in 1965
#5 in 1964
#5 in 1962

They started the rankings in 1949. From 1949-1961, severance had eight top twenty teams in those twelve years, with three of them in the top ten, peaking at 7.

In 2006 we had a preseason vote for number 1. In week 9 that increased to 2 votes. Duke was #1, uconn #2, for most of the early months. We lost in week 9 (wvu), but so did uconn, so we stayed at 3 and uconn dropped to 4. (Florida jumped us to 2, which surprises me because I forgot they started well that season). We lost again the next week (Texas) and fell to 8. We then went in a ten game win streak and climbed back up to 4 by week 14, were back getting a first place vote by week 15, and by week 16 we were ranked #2 with three first place votes.

That's the closest we have been to being #1 That I can remember. We then lost at #3 uconn that week and dropped to #4 and entered the tourney at #3.

The 2010 team received first place votes around week five when they were ranked #3. They lost in week 6 to temple but then went on another nice run and climbed back up to #2 on feb 5 with a couple first place votes. Kansas was #1, but they didn't lose again until the end of February.

I remember the 1996 team was #2 when they lost to temple early in the year.
