USA Today Countdown

Postby Bill Marsh » Tue Sep 24, 2013 3:17 pm

Scott Gleeson of USA Today has been publishing a daily countdown of the 68 teams that their staff projects to make the NCAA tournament this year. They are up to #35 and the first Big East team has shown up on the list:

Villanova, a #9 seed.

They do not say where they expect Villanova to finish in the Big East, but they say the following:

"The league race appears to be wide open, and the Wildcats would have to beat out four other NCAA tournament-caliber teams in Marquette, Creighton, Georgetown, and St. John's."

I'm taking that to mean that they are seeing the Big East as a 5 bid league with Villanova in the 5th spot and they other 4 finishing ahead of them. Earlier in the summer, they picked Creighton at #17 and Marquette at #22 in their top 25.

Notre Dame came in today at #30. Not the Big East. But still relevant to the Holy Land of Hoops.

OK-why is Notre Dame relevant to the Big East-because they are Catholic? I have no love for Notre Dame-sorry if that upsets you.

St. Louis came in today at #27. If they live up to that billing, it will definitely strengthen their candidacy for BE expansion.

Indiana came in today at #26. That means that Georgetown, Marquette, and Creighton will all be in the top 25.
