sciencejay wrote:Not sure what crawled up NJRedman's @$$ about Creighton fans, but this is the second thread that he's made the comment about us being elitist. I have no idea where that comes from, so get over yourself, housepet. Jays fans are proud of a solid history (in an obviously lesser conference), and we are excited about our opportunities in the BEast.

Maybe you are angry that our first year in the conference, we had the NPOY and didn't lay down and get beat by all you big time, traditional (read here "real") basketball powers. Maybe you are pissed that your school has not been great the past many years. Maybe you're pissed that in the midst of one of the largest metropolitan areas on the planet, you have a hard time filling your little on-campus arena. I don't know what it is, but I haven't seen anything remotely elitist about comments by Jays fans. I've seen a ton of support for Mullin as your new HC and as someone who might be the right guy to get you back toward the top of the conference on a consistent basis. Elitists would be endlessly pointing out the lack of coaching experience Mullin has and that you guys are killing the conference. The suggestion that the writer of a blog is young (I didn't get any sense that the writer is young either by the way) may/may not be condescending and/or elitist, but it's interesting that of all the completely ridiculous comments made on this site (many of them intentionally condescending and elitist), you call out Jays fans.

Now, with regard to the actual topic at hand, I completely disagree with the article's writer. Every event has die-hard fans, lesser fans and people who are mostly there for social purposes. I was at the Nova, G'Town and Providence games, and I don't have a problem with the crowd. Our fans are clearly motivated by good offense (and yes, we were multiply blessed during the DMD/Wragge era). The tough, slugfests in the BEast don't provide as many offensive outbursts (the PU game being the biggest example), so the crowd is quieter. There were times during the Hoyas game when I turned to my wife and said "This is a Wichita St crowd". As I'm sure you're all aware, we got up for WSU like no one else in the MVC-the entire building would shake. And it did when we went on our run against the Hoyas late. Some people like to complain, so they complain about others' behavior. I agree with the sentiment that the tickets have been sold and people can do as they please--they've already supported their team. I choose to support my team by buying season tickets and by staying for the whole game, but I stay for the whole game even in blowouts because I love college basketball. Nebraska is a football state first. I'm thrilled that so many Husker alums choose to buy season tickets for my alma mater's hoops team--it's up to them whether they stay or not.

Holy chit what the F are you going on about? I took exception to you all referring to him as a kid and yes acting elitist to anyone who DARE question your fan bases commitment. Get the F over yourself. Quit having your GD midwestern panties in a bunch because someone isn't on their knees praising you and your fickle fan base. He clearly is a grown man who has served his country and been in Omaha for some time now.

Oh and point out the other thread I said anything about Jays fans.

Huh? Wait 1.

I grew up in the Big O, but haven't lived in the area since late '83. You're telling me that Creighton stopped playing hoops at the Civic (with it's 4-6k diehards, SRO 10K)? When did this happen? You're sayin' they play in an State of the Art facility with 15K+ fans? Well that's news. If Rass can squeeze money out of the tight-butt Omahans and area fans...good for him and CU.
Rass has their Dinar, so if folks leave early - it's a nice problem to have.

One thing I do know...the community has supported the Jays forever...and very well since DA took over the reins in he mid 90's. Perhaps CU fanbase is spoiled, but they will continue to support Creighton athletics. Some say better entertainment is needed, along with a return to professionally crafted videos, music support, etc. Perhaps that is so, but the diehard winter sports segment, along with the diehard CU alums and fans, will continue to support basketball in the heartland of America. Their ain't much in the way of competition - the other area universities are well below CU's level and no pro teams within 250 miles (KCMO). St Louis, Denver, and Chitown are over 500 miles away.

As to a potential swoon (regularly or permanently) to mid tier or bottom tier positions....lol. Not happening. ;)
Luv ya,

Other than the young age thing (about which I agreed with your position), there were many, many comments that disagreed with the writer's perspective--comments from people like myself that actually attended the games in question. Maybe your panties are in a bunch for the aforementioned reasons, but you seem to be the only person who thought Jays fans responded to the writer's perspective in a condescending, elitist manner due to the fact that he DARE criticize the fan base. Most posters simply thought he was off base.

If you want to disagree with certain viewpoints, please provide opposing viewpoints instead of using lazy, condescending geographical slurs. Did you see the game in question in person? On TV? Did you observe the behavior of the crowd? Can you make an educated comment with regard to the accuracy of the writer's article? It would appear not. The author indicated he was a veteran of the US military and that he attends many games and that he didn't like crowds leaving early-especially when the game is on the line. I agree with that sentiment, but to suggest that it was the majority or some huge number of fans leaving is simply untrue as mentioned by many of us who were actually at the game. The author is a huge fan who thinks everyone should be fired up like he is. He loved BE basketball as a kid and finds an opportunity to rekindle that emotion here, and lo and behold, a few hundred ticket holders don't feel the same way he does. Seems shocking. For someone who has been to many places (presumably this makes his opinions more valid?) his thesis is not terribly open-minded.

Speaking of open-minded, GD Midwestern? Very nice. Yes, you are from the big city and we are all farmers who follow a team of mules pulling our plows and we all ride horses to the market to buy flour. Maybe if you ever visited this part of the world, you'd realize how narrow and uninformed your slurs are. And fickle fan base? We averaged over 16K/game with a team that went 4-14 in conference last year, and we are doing similar this year with a team predicted to do the same (although it appears we'll end up a little better than predicted). Whose fan base is fickle?

I do wonder how the style of play is impacting the fans with Creighton. After having years of just incredible shooting, to go to a game that ends 50-48 can be a bit jarring. Worst offensive game from what I can tell in almost 10 years for Creighton(since March 3,2006 a 54-47 loss in the QF of the MVC tourney. With only like 3 other games even all that close. I would think going from the style that Creighton was playing to more Big East style ball(which isn't even what it used to be)- can be rough.

I never criticized the fan base, you just said I did. I took exception to the kid thing and that was it. Thought he might have some valid points but he was being pretty much shouted down here.

You called me a F'in housepet so yeah be ready for midwestern jokes. You're lucky I didn't mention your inappropriate relationship with your sheep.

You don't like how New Yorkers respond to people calling us out? Tough chit.

Todays New York Daily News.

And that's where this thread is going to end. And you wonder why we can't have nice things?
